The vehicle tax will change in October 2019

From October 1, 2019, the vehicle tax, which must be paid by the car owner, and the vehicle purchase tax, which is charged during the purchase of a car, will change.

1. The vehicle tax amount (divided by type) will change

Cubic Capacity Displacement	Amount before the  change	Amount after the change
Below 1.000cc	¥29.500	¥25.000 (- ¥4.500)
1.001cc to 1.500cc	¥34.500	¥30.500 (- ¥4.000)
1.501cc to 2.000cc	¥39.500	¥36.000 (- ¥3.500)
2.001cc to 2.500cc	¥45.000	¥43.500 (- ¥1.500)

* Cars over 2.501cc will be reduced by – ¥ 1,000.

* The tax on cars registered before September 30, 2019 will not be changed!

2. The vehicle purchase tax (jidousha shutoku-zei) will be changed to “environmental performance discount (kankyo seinou-wari)”

When purchasing a car (including used cars), the tax will be decided according to the energy efficiency.  The more economical the car is, the lower the tax.

Registered cars	3%	0 to 3%
Light cars (kei jidousha)	2%	0 to 2%

* By way of exception, during the period from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020, the “environmental performance discount (kankyo seinou-wari)” for domestic vehicles will be decreased by 1%.
