Beware of heatstroke!

Heatstroke occurs when the body’s water and salt balance is disturbed by prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity.  The body’s thermoregulatory system does not work properly and heat builds up in the body.

This can occur even when nothing is happening indoors.  It may result in emergency medical treatment and in some cases, death.

Heatstroke prevention

  • Wear a hat or umbrella and wear cool, well-ventilated clothing.
  • Carry a drink with you and drink water and electrolytes (salt) often.
  • Open windows to improve ventilation.
  • Use curtains and blinds to block out the sun and prevent the temperature of the room you are in from rising.
  • Use a fan or air conditioning system, as the disease can occur indoors or while sleeping.
  • Be especially careful with young children and the elderly, as they are more susceptible to heat stroke.

Heatstroke symptoms

  • Dizziness, vertigo and nausea.
  • Cramps in legs and feet.
  • Abundant sweating.
  • Sensation of weakness.
  • Throbbing headache.
  • Numbness in arms and legs.

If you experience any of these symptoms

  • Rest in a cool place.
  • Call an ambulance immediately if you are unable to drink on your own, feel unwell, dizzy or have slow reactions.
