In 2024, there were 25 water accidents (involving 30 people) in Mie Prefecture, of which 4 cases (7 people) involved foreigners. Unfortunately, 4 people lost their lives.

Although the rivers and the Sea of Japan have clean water, there are also many dangerous places. Therefore, when enjoying yourself near the water, be extra careful to avoid accidents.

  1. Do not go near dangerous places
  • In areas with a lot of seaweed, there is a risk of slipping and being swept away by the current.
  • Places with strong currents or deep waters are extremely dangerous.
  • Never go into areas marked “Danger”.
  • Swim at beaches monitored by lifeguards and recognized as safe.
  1. Assess the situation carefully
  • Before going to the river or the sea, check the weather forecast. In case of strong winds, storms or lightning, cancel your trip.
  • If it is raining in the upper part of the river, the water level may rise suddenly.
  • Even if a typhoon is far away, it can cause high waves in the sea.
  • Avoid going into the water if you are in poor health or have consumed alcohol.
  1. Keep an eye on children
  • Young children have no sense of danger and may approach dangerous areas or act recklessly.
  • An adult must always be vigilant and ensure the safety of children.
  1. Wear a life jacket
  • When playing in rivers or the sea, wear a life jacket.
  • Make sure the vest is the right size for your body.
