To all foreigners who want to attend high schools, universities and technical schools

1. For people who want to attend high school (koko)

People who live in Japan can attend for free without paying the monthly fee through the Koto Gakko Shugaku Shien-kin Seido aid system (高等学校等就学支援金制度).

However, people who fall under one of the following items will not be able to receive assistance

• People whose parents have a combined annual income of more than ¥ 9.1 million
• People who have already graduated from high school
• People who have already attended high school for more than 36 months

* For private schools, there are cases where it is possible to receive aid depending on the parents’ income.

2. For people who want to attend universities and technical schools

With the help to attend high school “Koto Kyouiku no Shugaku Shien Seido” (高等教育の就学支援新制度), it is possible to receive full or partial scholarships for tuition and entrance fees to universities and technical schools that meet the stipulated conditions (click here to see the link).

People who are eligible

• Students from families exempted from residential tax (jumin-zei)

* In the case of foreigners, it will be necessary to fit into one of the following items:

• Special permanent resident (tokubetsu eijusha), permanent resident (eijusha), Japanese spouse, spouse of permanent resident, etc.
• In case of longterm residents (teijusha), only people that the director of the institution has recognized who wish to continue living in Japan

Examples of aid values

• Monthly scholarship grant

For family members exempted from type 1 residential tax.

In case of people who attend universities and live with their parents, ¥ 66,700 for public and ¥ 75,800 for private

* The amount is defined according to the family’s income
