  1. Eligibility Criteria (for non-Japanese applicants, etc.)

Non-Japanese individuals living with their guardians in Mie or with plans to live in Mie who have been residing in Japan for no more than 6 years by April 1, 2021.

  1. Number of Applications Accepted

As a general rule, each prefectural high school will accept up to 5 non-Japanese and/or returnee students through this screening. However, Iino High School’s English Communication Department will be accepting up to 10 non-Japanese and/or returnee students. The aforementioned figures reflect the total number of applications accepted during both first and second semester admissions. The maximum capacity of each respective school will be considered during the admissions process, and no school will exceed its student quota.

  1. Evaluation Methods

[First semester admissions] (Zenki Senbatsu)

Evaluation methods will vary by school and may include: interviews, evaluation of self-expression, essays, and/or written tests.

[Second semester admissions] (Kouki Senbatsu)

Essay and Interview

Evaluation by essay and interview will be conducted in the applicant’s native language, English, or Japanese. The decision of whether to admit an applicant will rest with the principal of the school. A written test may also be administered at the discretion of the school’s principal.

  1. Additional Screening Procedures

In addition to the evaluation methods addressed in the sections above, each school will also require that applicants submit a record of their junior high school grades in order to determine suitability and fit.

高校や大学、専門学校等で学びたい外国人のみなさんへ ~授業料の免除や奨学金について~

  1. For people who want to attend high school (koko)

People who live in Japan can attend for free without paying the monthly fee through the Koto Gakko Shugaku Shien-kin Seido aid system (高等学校等就学支援金制度).

However, people who fall under one of the following items will not be able to receive assistance

  • People whose parents have a combined annual income of more than ¥ 9.1 million
  • People who have already graduated from high school
  • People who have already attended high school for more than 36 months

* For private schools, there are cases where it is possible to receive aid depending on the parents’ income.

  1. For people who want to attend universities and technical schools

With the help to attend high school “Koto Kyouiku no Shugaku Shien Seido” (高等教育の就学支援新制度), it is possible to receive full or partial scholarships for tuition and entrance fees to universities and technical schools that meet the stipulated conditions (click here to see the link).

People who are eligible

  • Students from families exempted from residential tax (jumin-zei)

* In the case of foreigners, it will be necessary to fit into one of the following items:

  • Special permanent resident (tokubetsu eijusha), permanent resident (eijusha), Japanese spouse, spouse of permanent resident, etc.
  • In case of longterm residents (teijusha), only people that the director of the institution has recognized who wish to continue living in Japan

Examples of aid values

  • Monthly scholarship grant

For family members exempted from type 1 residential tax.

In case of people who attend universities and live with their parents, ¥ 66,700 for public and ¥ 75,800 for private
