Hoiku-sho (Japanese daycare centers) are designated places for the education of children aged 0 to 5 years before entering the “shogakko” (primary school) for parents and guardians who, for health, work, illness and other reasons , cannot educate or care for their children at home.

Registration for the use of daycare centers or other places, for admission on April 1, 2021, will take place between September and October 2020 in many municipalities.

* From October 1, 2019, the fee for the use of kindergartens (youchien – 幼稚園) and daycare centers (hoikusho – 保育 所) for children aged 3 to 5 years is free.

However, there is a limit on the price that can be free.  There are amounts that have to be paid in cash.  Only for low-income families whose residential tax (jumin-zei) is ¥ 0, the usage fee for children aged 0-2 will be free.
