The Non-Japanese Resident Population in Mie Rises to 41,251

Results of the 2014 Non-Japanese Resident Census (Data accurate as of 31 December 2014)

Each year, the Mie Prefectural Government works with municipalities in the prefecture to conduct a census of the non-Japanese resident population in Mie. The results of the census can be found below. Data on the non-Japanese resident population collected during and prior to 2011 were based on information obtained through the alien registration system (abolished and replaced by the resident system in 2012)

• As of the end of the 2014 calendar year, the number of non-Japanese residents in Mie was 41,251 people (increase of 30 people or 0.1%). This is the first time in 6 years that the non-Japanese population of Mie has increased.

• The non-Japanese resident population of Mie is currently 395% larger than it was in 1989 and 5% smaller than it was 10 years ago (2004).

• The non-Japanese resident community now represents 2.22% of the overall prefectural citizen and resident population, an increase of 0.01% since the last census.

(For reference- according to the 2013 census, the non-Japanese resident community represented 2.34％ of Mie’s overall population, making Mie the prefecture with the 3^rd largest non-Japanese resident to overall population ratio nationwide according to the Ministry of Justice’s statistics on non-Japanese residents.)

• The most represented nationality in Mie’s non-Japanese resident community is Brazilian (11,505 people, a 4.1% decrease since the last census), followed by Chinese (8,731 people, a 3.2% decrease since the last census) and Filipino (5,890 people, a 4.3% increase since the last census). Mie’s non-Japanese resident community represents 103 nationalities (at the time of the last census, Mie’s non-Japanese resident community represented 102 nationalities).

• An analysis by municipality reveals that the city with the largest non-Japanese resident community is Yokkaichi (7,690 people and 2.46％ of the overall population), followed by Tsu (7,264 people and 2.55％ of the overall population), Suzuka(6,962 people, and 3.46％ of the population).

 

The municipalities with the largest non-Japanese resident to overall population ratio are Iga (4.37％), Kisosaki(4.31％), Suzuka(3.46％).
