Details

The Ise Route of the Kumano Kodo stretches from Ise Grand Shrine to the Three Kumano Shrines, connecting the two of the most sacred places on the Kii Peninsula. Literary references to the Ise Route appear as early as the Songs to Make the Dust Dance on the Beams (a collection of songs compiled during the Heian Period), and the route has been used both as a walking path as well as a pilgrimage route for those traveling to the Three Kumano Shrines and various religious sites across Western Japan.

This exhibit will retrace the steps of the countless travelers that have used the Ise Route since the Heian Period, as well as various aspects of the route as it exists today.

Exhibit Format

  1. Recreating the Kumano Kodo
  2. The Pilgrimage to Western Japan’s 33 Kannon Worship Sites
  3. The Ise Route Today
  4. The Natural Beauty of the Ise Route
