Stop! Prevent water-related accidents!

2026/08/05 Wednesday Announcements, Security

In 2025, 25 water-related accidents involving 25 people were recorded in Mie Prefecture. Of these, two accidents involved foreign nationals, resulting in two fatalities.

Rivers and the sea present various dangers. To prevent water-related accidents, please pay attention to the following points:

Wear a life jacket

  • None of the individuals who died in water-related accidents were wearing a life jacket.
  • When playing in the water or fishing, both adults and children should always wear a life jacket that fits their body size.

Children should not play in the water alone; adults must keep them under constant supervision.

  • It is dangerous to let children play in the water alone. They should always be accompanied by an adult when playing in the water.
  • Accidents at sea or in rivers can happen in a matter of seconds. The longer it takes to notice an accident and perform a rescue, the higher the risk of death. Therefore, do not go alone; always ensure you are accompanied by others.
  • Small children do not yet fully understand the dangers of water and may engage in risky behavior. Adults must keep them under constant observation and ensure their safety.

Properly assess the situation.

  • After periods of rain, rivers can experience increased water volume and stronger currents, making them dangerous.
  • At sea, even in sunny weather, high waves can occur due to the influence of typhoons and other weather phenomena.
  • Check the weather forecast; if bad weather or high waves are predicted, avoid going near rivers, beaches, or other waterside areas.
  • Your judgment may be impaired if you are sleep-deprived or not feeling well. Avoid water activities under these conditions.

Do not go near dangerous areas

  • In areas with large amounts of seaweed, there is a risk of slipping and being swept away by currents or waves.
  • Areas with strong currents or deep water are extremely dangerous.
  • Never enter areas marked as “Dangerous Area” or with similar warning signs.
  • Choose to swim in safe locations, such as beaches supervised by lifeguards or safety personnel.
