The “End-of-Year Traffic Safety Campaign” Will be Held

2025/11/25 Tuesday Announcements

The end of the year is a time of increased pedestrian and vehicular activity, leading to an increase in traffic accidents.

All residents of the prefecture should raise their awareness of traffic safety and drive safely, taking time and consideration to ensure a comfortable and safe driving environment.

  1. Period

10 days from December 1st, Monday to December 10th, 2025 Wednesday

(Monday, December 1st is the “Mie Prefecture Drunk Driving Zero Promotion Campaign Day.”)

  1. Campaign Focus

(1) Preventing Traffic Accidents Involving Children and the Elderly

  • Seniors should understand the impact of changes in physical function on driving and drive appropriately, taking into account the weather, physical condition, and other factors.
  • When traveling on school routes, etc., please reduce your speed to prevent traffic accidents.
  • Drive with consideration for the protection of children and the elderly, and strive to prevent accidents by anticipating hazards.
  • At dusk, be sure to turn on your lights early so you can spot pedestrians, cyclists, and other pedestrians early.

(2) Always give pedestrians the right of way at crosswalks and practice safe crossing techniques.

  • If there are pedestrians near a crosswalk, slow down so you can stop immediately. Always stop when pedestrians are crossing the road and allow them to cross safely.
  • Pedestrians, if there is a crosswalk nearby, you should always use it.
Also, before crossing, stop once and check both sides for safety before crossing.
  • Some drivers may not notice pedestrians.
Pedestrians should signal to the driver that they are ready to cross by slightly raising their hand, and wait until the car has stopped before crossing.

(3) Ensure that seat belts and child seats are worn correctly.

  • Fasten seat belts in all seats to protect lives.
  • When traveling with children under the age of 6, use the child seat correctly to prevent traffic accidents.
  • For children over the age of 6 who are unable to wear a seat belt properly due to physical reasons (such as being small), use a child seat or booster seat.

(4) Eliminate Drunk Driving and Other Vicious and Dangerous Driving

  • Understand that drunk driving is a vicious and dangerous crime and carries serious consequences.
  • Do not travel by car if you expect to drink alcohol.
  • Not only those who drink and drive, but also those who provide alcohol to drivers, provide vehicles to drivers, and ride with drivers are subject to severe penalties.
  • Drinking and driving is absolutely prohibited not only for cars and motorcycles, but also for bicycles.
  • Drinking and driving on bicycles is subject to the same penalties as drunk driving.
  • Malicious and dangerous tailgating, which can lead to serious traffic accidents, and using a smartphone while driving is strictly prohibited.

(5) Thoroughly understand and follow traffic rules for bicycles and specified small motorized scooters, and promote helmet use.

  • While bicycles are a vehicle that anyone can easily ride, they must also follow traffic rules as a “vehicle.”
  • To protect lives, all bicycle riders should wear a helmet.
  • Electric scooters that meet the standards are classified as “specified small motorized scooters” and do not require a driver’s license. However, they are subject to traffic rules, such as the requirement to attach a license plate and to purchase automobile liability insurance.
  • Before using an electric scooter, carefully review the traffic rules and use it safely.
  • Please note that pedal-equipped electric scooters (mopeds) are considered regular motorized scooters or automobiles and require a driver’s license.
