To minimize damage caused by earthquakes and tsunamis, it is important to be prepared daily. Discuss your preparedness measures with your family.

Things to discuss

There is a possibility of a tsunami occurring after an earthquake. Decide on a location where the family can evacuate and reunite. Deciding on a family evacuation location will allow family members to find each other even if cell phones and other devices are unavailable after a disaster.

Prepare an emergency kit

After an earthquake or before a tsunami arrives, you need to evacuate quickly.

To ensure you can quickly escape with what you need in an emergency, pack the minimum items you need to take immediately into a backpack (preferably a bag that allows you to move both hands freely during an evacuation).

Examples of items that should be kept in an emergency backpack

(Families should also discuss among themselves what to put in their emergency bag)

  • Foods

Drinking water (plastic bottles), dry bread, crackers

  • Clothes

Raincoat, change of clothes, underwear, windbreaker

  • Valuables

Cash (credit cards may not be accepted after a disaster), Passport, cell phone, cell phone charger

  • Others

Whistle (to alert others to your presence, for example if you are trapped in a collapsed building)

Disposable Body Warmer

The Nankai Trough earthquake is a large earthquake that will occur from Shizuoka Prefecture to the southernmost seas of Kochi Prefecture.

When this earthquake occurs, tsunamis can also be generated. In the past, many lives have been lost in Mie Prefecture due to tsunamis following large earthquakes.

To protect yourself from earthquakes and tsunamis, first check the evacuation centers and hazard maps in your area and find out about the tsunami flood zone and the situation around your home.

Information about evacuation centers in each municipality is compiled on the website

Characteristics of a tsunami

  • It is extremely fast, reaching speeds of around 10m/s (36km/h) even near the coast.
  • It doesn’t necessarily start with the water receeding or a drawdown.
  • It can travel up to the rivers and waterways.
  • People may not be able to move even if the tsunami is about 30 cm. You may not be able to evacuate and your life may be in danger.
  • Wooden houses are said to be partially destroyed by a 1m tsunami and completely destroyed by a 2m tsunami.
