What to do in case of an earthquake (MieInfo article) – click here

To minimize damage caused by earthquakes and tsunamis, it is important to be prepared daily. Discuss your preparedness measures with your family.

Things to discuss

There is a possibility of a tsunami occurring after an earthquake. Decide on a location where the family can evacuate and reunite. Deciding on a family evacuation location will allow family members to find each other even if cell phones and other devices are unavailable after a disaster.

Prepare an emergency kit

After an earthquake or before a tsunami arrives, you need to evacuate quickly.

To ensure you can quickly escape with what you need in an emergency, pack the minimum items you need to take immediately into a backpack (preferably a bag that allows you to move both hands freely during an evacuation).

Examples of items that should be kept in an emergency backpack

(Families should also discuss among themselves what to put in their emergency bag)

  • Foods

Drinking water (plastic bottles), dry bread, crackers

  • Clothes

Raincoat, change of clothes, underwear, windbreaker

  • Valuables

Cash (credit cards may not be accepted after a disaster), Passport, cell phone, cell phone charger
