In this special spring exhibition “The Sacred Sakura of Kumano ~ Competing Blooms of Echigo and Fukushima Sakura~”we will be displaying Shimizu’s Kumano sakura photos printed on traditional Japanese paper made in Ise. This exhibition will view landscapes through the lens of the sakura, and features not only photos of sakura in Kumano, but also the sakura of Shimizu’s birthplace, Niigata Prefecture, and the sakura of Fukushima Prefecture, a region still recovering from the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. With each sakura rooted in its own climate and geography, viewing them together through this exhibition offers a chance for visitors to rediscover the beauty of Kumano, Mie and Japan as a whole.
