Parent Consultation Sessions for Children Who Refuse to Attend School 2026

1. Purpose

When a child refuses to attend school, some parents may be troubled because they don’t know how to deal with their child, feel anxious about their child’s future, or wonder if they are partly to blame for the child’s refusal. The Mie Prefectural Board of Education will hold nine “Parent Consultation Sessions for Children Who Refuse to Attend School” to provide parents with necessary information, opportunities for interaction among parents, and opportunities to consult with specialized institutions, so that children who refuse to attend school can receive appropriate support.

5. Content of the Day

(1) Lecture

Postgraduate students, professionals who have experienced school refusal, and psychology specialists will speak about their feelings regarding children experiencing school refusal, the school, and their caregivers.

(2) Experience sharing meeting

Participating caregivers will exchange opinions, mediated by school counselors and school social workers.

(3) Individual consultation

Individual consultations will be available at booths separated by the type of professional providing the service.

・ ① and ② will be school counselors and school social workers assigned by the Mie Prefectural Board of Education to schools or educational support centers in or near the venue.
・③ and ⑦ may not be available due to circumstances.

・④ will be staff from educational support centers in or near the venue.

6. Speakers

  • Kenji Watanabe (渡邉 賢二): 1st and 9th editions (Tsu), 2nd edition (Yokkaichi), and 4th edition (Ise).

Specially appointed professor at Kogakkan University, certified psychologist, and school refusal support advisor for Mie Prefecture. Specializes in educational psychology and family psychology. He will speak, from the perspective of a psychology expert, about the emotional state of children and ways to relate to them.

  • Ririka Murakami (むらかみ りりか): 3rd edition (Iga).

Master trainer of “Communication in Developmental Sciences” and author of “HSC: Training for Parents to Understand How to Raise Sensitive Children.” She will talk about interaction methods that help organize the hearts and brains of sensitive or highly perceptive children who have difficulty going to school, so that they can take a step forward.

  • Kazuya Shirota (代田 和也): 5th edition (Kumano) e 7th edition (Matsusaka).

Director, producer, and announcer at Mie FM Broadcasting (Radio Cube FM Mie). He experienced school refusal when he was in middle school. He will talk about his experiences and feelings from that time and how he found his current job.

  • Young person with experience of school refusal: 6th edition (Kuwana) and 8th edition (Suzuka).

Postgraduate student who researches, in a practical way, animal-assisted education through “rescued dogs”. Experienced school refusal when in high school. Will talk about her experiences and feelings at the time and about the relationship with parents and school.

Register using one of the methods below.

(2) Register directly with the Mie Prefectural Education Committee by phone or email.

 

If registering by email, please include in the subject line: “Registration for the consultation meeting for parents/guardians – (location name)”, and provide the following information:

[participant’s name (parent/guardian), contact information (phone and email address), desired location for participation, type of school the child is enrolled in, school, grade/year, child’s name, city/municipality of residence, and content in which they wish to participate (lecture, experience-sharing meeting, and/or individual consultation)].
