Hi everyone! Thank you for watching MieInfo. In this video, we will introduce the charms of Matsusaka City, where traditional and modern culture are combined.

First, we will start by introducing the traditional side. We went to the Okaderasan Keishoji, which is located in the center of the city. Today is the 13th year of the “Matsusaka Nadeshiko Donna Hana Matsuri”.

In order to know the charms of Matsusaka, we spoke with Higashimura, a member of Miss Network Matsusaka, the sponsors of this festival.

Q: Can you please tell us about the charm of Matsusaka.

A: What’s charming about Matsusaka is that there are still many old towns left which makes it a town reminiscent of a castle town. There are still stone walls in the castle, and the roads are intricate, like a maze, that makes it a fun city to have a stroll.

Q: Can you tell us about the Matsusaka Nadeshiko.

A: Matsusaka Nadeshiko is a type of flower in which the petals are long and sagging and was discovered during the Edo period. It was discovered by Tsugimatsu Eiji, member of the Kishu clan, and everyone has preserved it since then. It is conveyed to a temple called Hokyoji Temple in Kyoto by the Koukakutenno and has been carefully planted until now.

Q: Please tell me about Matsusaka Momen.

A: Matsusaka Momen is a blue textile with stripe patterns that is much adored by people from Edo period. At that time, when a Kabuki actor dons a striped kimono, it was like “wearing Matsusaka”. It was a very popular kimono at that time. I hope you have an opportunity to touch it.

Q: Please give a message to the foreigners.

A: The meat in Matsusaka are also delicious! We also have delicious tea! And there is also the Matsusaka Momen! A lot of traditions remain until now! Please come to Matsusaka and have a full experience! I look forward to seeing you!

Next, we went to the Kanko Koryu Center (Tourist Exchange Center), which was opened in April this year. Here, you can get tourist information of Matsusaka city in multiple languages.

We asked Mr. Takegawa, the managing director, what kind of facilities they have here.

Q: What kind of facility is the Kanko Koryu Center (Tourism Exchange Center)?

A: The Tourism Exchange Center is in the middle of Matsusaka’s old atmosphere town. It is more interesting if you have a bit of information in your head as you walk around the city. Then there were opinions from tourists that there is no place to buy souvenirs (in Matsusaka city), so we sell souvenirs on the first floor. On the second floor, the tourists can have more information through panel displays or DVDs.

Q: Why is it called “Gosho no Machi Matsusaka”?

A: Matsusaka’s history, especially around the castle, is nearly 400 years old, but some of Japan’s leading merchants such as “Mitsukoshi” and “Mitsui Group” came from Matsusaka. Moreover, part of the establishment they lived is still in Matsusaka. Because of these reasons Matsusaka is named “Gosho no Machi” (Town of Merchants).

Q: Matsusaka’s gourmet is very famous. But, especially, what kind of products?

A: Matsusaka is a city of gourmet. Particularly famous are the beef, the Matsusaka-ushi. Besides that, Matsusaka pork and chicken are also becoming popular recently. In addition to that, Matsusaka is a place where the production of tea is very popular, so you can get delicious tea.

Q: Matsusaka City is where traditional culture lives, but could you please tell the recommended spots (walking routes)?

A: Matsusaka has many old buildings. They are concentrated around the tourism exchange center, so it’s nice if you walk around that area of the city. And if you extend your foot a little to the outskirts, you will find a beautiful tea plantation, and the forests and rivers are also very beautiful. If you want to know the history and culture, go to the central area. But, if you want to enjoy the natural, I recommend going to the surroundings. I think you will find what you are looking for.

Q: Please give a message to the foreigners.

A: I think that many people here will kindly help you. There may be a language barrier, but I think you can walk in the town of Matsusaka with some simple conversation. I would like to invite you to visit Matsusaka, look at the old buildings, eat good food, and I will be expecting you to come again (as a repeater).

Finally, we went to Matsuzaka-shi Sogo Undo Koen Skate Park. It is one of the largest skateboarding lanes in Japan, which was opened in April this year.

Interview with visitors

I’m from Fukui Prefecture. It’s a big and very clean park and it has a street section. I think it is a great park.

Q: What do you like about Skateboarding?

You can make many acquaintances and friends through skateboarding. Regardless of whether you are good or bad at it, you can still get along with everyone when skating. Skateboarding is a very enjoyable experience, so I recommend you try it if you have never done it before. And I think this park in of Mie-ken Matsusaka City is very big. I recommend people from outside the prefecture to come and visit.

It offers a variety of areas for beginners and advanced users to enjoy at different levels, as well as rentals for the necessary equipment, including skateboards. It is open on weekends and the opening hours are from 8:30am to 10pm. The admission fee is 300 yen for adults, 100 yen for high school and junior high school students, and elementary school students and below can enjoy it for free all day long. There are also trial sessions for beginners, so please come and enjoy skateboarding at Matsusaka.

Ise Shima, the city chosen as the host for Ise Shima Summit 2016, was designated as Ise Shima National Park and it is one of the places in Japan where abundant natural landscapes still remain. That region is well- known by giving rise to Ise Jingu, Ama culture (woman diver), pearl cultivation and it is also a region that inherited cultures and long-standing traditions.

In this video, we will present the beauties of Ise Shima through the content extracted during the “Instameet@Ise Shima Kokuritsu Kouen”, sightseeing spots tour to promote photos on social media.

朝熊山(Asamayama)

Our journey starts at Ise Shima Skyline, an area connecting Ise and Toba cities. Even though a fee of 1.250 yen is charged (for ordinary vehicles), a relaxing route boasting stunning landscapes is waiting for you.

We started the tour going to Ise city, first we visited the Asamayama Observatory. A recommended place boasting an incredible view.

Asamayama is located within Ise Shima National Park and it is one of the sightseeing spots in Mie Prefecture selected as one of  “Japan’s one hundred landscapes”. That mountain, a famous place due to its beautiful sunrise on the first day of the year, is also well-known because it is a sacred mountain representing Ise Shima.

The observatory, situated on the edge of 555 meters high, boasts an excellent visibility of Ise Bay’s islands. On sunny days, it is possible to see Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps.

“Today I was blessed by the good weather and I managed to take pictures while I was thrilled by this blue sky and incredible landscape able to cleanse the soul. It is an extremely beautiful place and I want to come again, I want to record this spectacle more times.

金剛證寺 (Kongou Shoji)

The next place is Kongou Shoji, located next to Asamayama Observatory. The entrance is free. That place is known as the guardian temple of Kimon, direction where demons enter and go out, of Ise Jingu and inner temple of Jingu, it was common for people carry out the pilgrimage after visiting the Ise Jingu, as mentioned on Ise songs (Ise Ondo) in the excerpt saying: “If you visit Ise Jingu you will also have to go to Asama, if you won’t go to Asama you will not have concluded the pilgrimage” (“O Ise Mairaba Asama wo Kakeyo, Asama Kakeneba Katamairi”).

The Maniden, stunning golden-plated main temple inside and red outside, was selected as an important culture inheritance of the country (juyou bunka-zai).

英虞湾(Ago-wan)

Following through Ise Shima Skyline, we get in Toba city. Traveling about 40 minutes by car from Toba, we have the Kashikojima Port in Shima city. Here it is possible to enjoy the beautiful Ago Bay boarding a cruise boat. The fee for adults is from 1.400 yen.

Marked by the complex coastline, the Ago Bay is also located within Ise Shima National Park. Pearls production has developed there and, since 8th century the place has been exporting pearls. Since the beginning of pearls cultivation late in the 9th century, this is the first major area of pearls cultivation.

The several islands and peninsulas of many shapes boast a beauty that cannot be expressed by words. Taking pictures of this place is also pleasant, but enjoy the landscape in the open may be an unforgettable experience.

桐垣展望台 (Kirigaki Tenboudai)

To conclude the tour we will present the Kirigaki Observatory. It is a place where it is possible to take incredible pictures, however the sunset landscape is the most recommended.

The Kirigaki Observatory is located on the east side of Ago Bay, between the following islands: Kashikojima (right side), Masakijima (front) and the Sakishima Peninsula (left side). It is a place well-known by the beautiful sunset representing Shima city, and many people who appreciate photography visit this sightseeing point. The beautiful scenery of Ago Bay colored by sunset is amazing and it is worth a visit to experience that moment. If you go for a stroll around Ago Bay, visit the observatory. Entrance and parking lot are free of charge.

“Today I came here to take a picture of the sunset ending. The twilight is not so strong, but I’ve tried to take long exposure photography (timelapse). The passing clouds were good, and I could take a nice picture. It is a nice place to enjoy the crimson sunset and recommended to take pictures”.

In this video we presented just one part of the beauties of Ise Shima. There are other several places to take pictures and publish on social media. The Ise Shima National Park, compared to other national parks, has an extremely high percentage of private property (96%), in addition to a high number of residents, offering the opportunity to get to know people’s daily life, history, culture, costumes, among others.

Today we are going to introduce these amazing places of Nabana no Sato.

The park Nabana no Sato, located in Kuwana City (Mie Prefecture) is famous by the beauty of its seasonal flowers such as azaleas, tulips, roses, narcissus and a range of beautiful plants and flowers attracting visitors in all seasons of the year.

At the park, there is the “Begonia Garden”, a 9.000- square meter greenhouse exhibiting plants and different types of flowers.  About 12.000 begonias make this place special. There are several environments inside this garden and the large diversity of begonias in full bloom delights people visiting this place. Colors, aromas and beautiful flower arrangements please all the visitors.

Let’s explore it a little more?

Therefore, during its famous winter illumination event, the park attracts many visitors. With millions of LED lights adorning the place, Nabana no Sato carries out one of the largest illumination events in Japan.

Winter Illumination is held every year, between October to May. In 2016, the illumination event kicked off on October 15 and runs until 2017, May 7. You can check out the dates at Nabana no Sato’s official website.

The 200 meters long “Tunnel of Lights” is formed by small petal-shaped incandescent bulbs in addition to a large field becoming a sea of lights that is a true masterpiece because is so spectacular. There is also a moving observation platform from where visitors are awarded by a general landscape of the park.

After going through the tunnel of lights, visitors have access to a theme area that in 2016 was named “The Beauty of Mother Nature”, a display of lights and sound.

This large theme illumination taking place successively features famous scenes of the world, where everyone dreams to visit someday, such as:

• Monument Valley, American Continent
• The Antarctic Continent
• The African Continent
• Eurasia / Plitvice Lakes
• Japanese Rice Terraces

And after visiting the theme area, visitors will go through another beautiful tunnel of lights, named “Autumn”.  This tunnel, where traditional colors of this season are featured, lights change from green to orange and red, representing the color change of the trees’ leaves.

Next to the chapel there are the “Twin Trees”. These trees symbolizing the park have been chosen as the most beautiful Christmas decorations of 2015. The LED lights were carefully set up to the edge of the tree branches, creating a dense and glamorous illumination. It is possible to hold wedding ceremonies at this chapel.

In the illumination on the waters called “Bright River” a rare type to see in Japan, where the flow of water is at the same time represented in a delicate and gracious form, and the flow of the falls is intense.  The beauty of the waters and its different forms can be enjoyed along with its interesting version of a vibrant musical background.

There are about 10 restaurants in the park, ready to serve all the audiences, offering the best of the Japanese, Italian and Chinese cuisine, among other gourmet delicacies. To relief fatigue, there are hot springs where visitors can immerse their feet at ease, and relax. Next to the entrance/exit there are souvenir stores, cafeterias and flower shop, in addition to a bakery where visitors can taste a baked bread, made to order.

The park Nabana no Sato is an excellent tour option and leisure with family because it is a wide and open place. For sure, here at Nabana no Sato, visitors will spend a pleasant day because the park is gorgeous, offering many places adorned with plants and flowers from different species and vivid colors.

“Nabana no Sato opened in 1998 aiming to offer the visitors the beauty of seasonal flowers. The park was projected to visitors can experience the seasonal landscapes, enjoying each season of the year. In Spring, we have plum trees and Kawarazu cherry blossoms, both with early flowering, and the tulips adorn a large area in the park. In summer, we have hydrangeas, iris and in Autumn the delicate cosmos and different species of dahlias. Here visitors can enjoy the beauty of the flowers in all the seasons of the year. We also have the illumination. Nabana no Sato is a precious place, where people can enjoy both illumination and the flowers, a wonderful place where the visitor can spend a pleasant day.”

Let’s have a better look in Mie Prefecture?

Higashi Kishu Region (Owase-shi, Kumano-shi, Kihoku-cho, Mihama-cho, Kihou-cho)

Higashi Kishu region has a stunning nature, where the beauty of the rivers and the mountains contrasts with rocky monuments on the seafront. In summer, the Kumano Hanabi Taikai attracts visitors from whole Japan.

The Kumano Kodo is located in this region and it is one of the World Heritage Sites. As well as the stunning beauty, there are ancient history about pilgrimage routes.  A perfect place fora stroll and reflection.

Ise-Shima Region (Ise-shi, Toba-shi, Shima-shi, Tamaki-cho,Watarai-cho, Minami Ise-cho)

In this region the attractive isconcentrated on the seafront, where the gastronomy is rich and eccentric. Tekone Zushi and Ise Udon are dishes very appreciated by tourists who visit the region.

Ise Jingu is composed by “Geku” and “Naiku” and is visited during all the year by many people. For sure, the walk around this temple will offer the visitor peace of mind.

Chusei Region (Tsu-shi, Matsusaka-shi, Taki-cho, Meiwa-cho, Oodai-cho, Taiki-cho)

In this region is located the capital of this prefecture, the city of Tsu. In this area there are inns with thermal spring, where you can relax and appreciate a beautiful view of the mountains.

The city of Tsu offers many cultural and historical museums with a modern infrastructure where all the family can enjoy all the day.  In Tsu are located the “MieMu” (Mie Prefectural Museum), the”Mie Center for the Arts” and, in Meiwa town, there is the “Saiku Museum” (historical museum of Mie).

“Matsusaka Gyu” is one of the most award winning beef of the country, buyers from whole Japan come to this region to try out this delicacy.

Iga Region (Nabari-shi, Iga-shi)

Iga region is well known by ninjyutsu Iga-ryu and there is the “Iga-ryu Ninja Hakubsutukan” a museum where visitants can explore the history and also experience some techniques on this martial art. The museum is located on the spot of Iga Ueno Castle.

The nature on this region also attracts several tourists; the wellknown ones are the Akame 48 falls and the “Kouchi Dani” area that are famous for its autumn colorful leaves.

Hokusei Region (Yokkaichi-shi, Suzuka-shi, Kameyama-shi, Inabe-shi, Kisosaki-cho,Touin-cho, Komono-cho, Asahi-cho, Kawagoe-cho)

Covering the northern area of Mie, Hokusei offers many attractive like “Mount Gozaisho”, where the panoramic view is stunning all the year. The region’s industrial center of  Yokkaichi city is well known by its beautiful night view.

As well as tourist attractions plenty of culture, this region also has a theme park where people from every age can enjoy. In the city of Suzuka there is the “Suzuka Circuit” where is held the international race of F1, where famous pilots marked their history. Also, there are the famous parks “Nagashima Spa Land” and “Nabana no Sato”.

In this video, we wil show just one part of the wonders of Mie Prefecture. Mie Prefecture offers several other tourist attractions where the nature and culture are stunning.

Most of the places are accessible and there are plenty of materials translated in various languages, making easy for foreigners citizens, as well as tourists from abroad.

Hello everyone. Today we will present a well- known place in Mie Prefecture. Gozaisho is a place that worth a visit, since there are activities all year round. So, let’s get to know a little more about Gozaisho.

I believe there are many people who still does not know Gozaisho, could you tell us about this place?

“Mount Gozaisho, with its 1,212 meters tall, is well- known because it is a proper place for hiking and climbing, in addition to be a mountain with a ropeway.  As you can see, despite the great amount of snow, the place is very accessible. Mount Gozaisho is a very interesting tourist attraction, since it offers an excellent panoramic view.

How is Gozaisho Ski Resort?

“I imagine most of people think “Is there a ski resort in Mie?” “There is no ski resort in Mie!” Everyone may think like that, butthis is the only ski resort in Mie.  The ski course is small, but ideal for beginners. Therefore, for those who intend to start skiing or have interest in skiing, here is the best place to learn the essential. Ideal to beginners”.

Excluding the winter, how is Gozaisho in the other seasons?

“In Japan the four season are well defined, and in Mount Gozaisho it is possible to catch a glimpse at the beauty when the season changes. It is the proper place to enjoy the beauty of this phenomenon of nature. Residents who live on the foot of Mount Gozaisho, just by looking at it, they notice if it is spring, summer, autumn or winter. But, in nature surrounds, it is possible to see the transition between the seasons, see thisphenomenon of nature, it is fabulous”.

Could you leave a message to foreign residents?

“Welcome to Japan! For foreigners who live in Japan, especially in Mie Prefecture, I would like to say this winter this place will be covered by heavy snow! And I also would like to invite everyone to explore this world, where the temperature is below zero, experience this icy season of the year. I believe the other seasons, spring, summer and autumn will be very interesting to get to know.”

This place is well-known, as in the past it was the place for Igaryu ninja practice. Next to the waterfalls, there is a place called “Ninja no Mori”, where children can experience ninjyutsu practice. Depending on the season, there are night illumination and decorated candles display. This local is ideal to take pictures, both day and night.

In the waterfalls entrance we can see the “Japan Salamander Center”, there are some 60 salamander including species originated from Akame region. It is a rare kind of animal museum.

– Could you tell us about the wonders of AkameShijyuHachiTaki?

“This valley was formed 15 million years ago, the clear waters shaped this chain of volcanos, forming a natural museum. Visitants can see the beauty of this place since the entrance.

Another wonder is the great number of waterfalls. Normally, there is only one waterfall, but here following the trail, it is possible to see the waterfalls one by one, and go through their upside.”

– Is there a tip for the visitors? Could you tell us?

” What I would like to ask the visitors is that to use suitable shoes to visit the place. Since there are many stones on the trail, we ask the visitors to avoid using sandals or slippers. There is no need to use boots for climbing, but shoes that can protect your feet.

And, if the visitorsfollow the trail until the end, it may be late to return, so we ask them to determine their route according to their physical condition, in order to enjoy the waterfalls beauty.”

[Interview with Mrs. Nakamura – MieMu – Mie Prefectural Museum]

This here is the Miezou elephant. Since the first fossil was found in Mie, it was named Miezou. In its scientific name, Stegodon Miensis, it is also included the name of Mie.

It measured 4 meters high to the shoulders and 8 meters long from jawbone to the tail. It was the largest species of elephant that lived in Japan.

In Miemu, it is the first time that this fossil is being exhibited in Japan. Enjoy the opportunity to see it!

Hands-on Chidren’s Exhibit

This is the area of hands-on children’s exhibit. In the section here behind, you can play around looking for various animals and things related to Mie’s culture.

Main Exhibit

This is the area of main exhibit. The theme of this area is the potential of Mie diversity. Thus, Mie owns a cultural diversity and diverse natural areas.

As you go in, the first section shows how Mie looked like in the early days of Japanese archipelago.

Here you can observe the exhibits of the dinosaur found in Toba, the Tobaryu, and Miezou Elephant.

Going to the back side, the whole culture and natural diversity is concentrated in this room. Surrounded by nature around, there is a culture and surrounded by this culture, there is a whole history that you can explore.

In this section, the Isemairi is on display, the visit to the temple Isejingu. The Isemairi became famous in the Edo period, and here a reproduction of the season is on display.

This is the giant Japanese salamander aquarium. Through it, you can see a specimen of the giant Japanese salamander, and more detailed explanations. The salamander raised here was nicknamed by all as San-chan. It is a large salamander with 114 cm long.

Museum Field

Here is the Museum Field. A location with a wonderful view and a beautiful green area. Especially this time of year, in which insects and plants gain more life.

In the city of Yokkaichi there is a place called “Banko no Sato Kaikan” which has a magnificent display of handmade items made with the technique Yokkaichi Banko Yaki, in addition to a store with a wide variety of beautiful products. There is also an area for training and learning of this important technique in Mie’s culture.

Let’s hear the explanation of Mr. Ishizaki who will give more details about the Yokkaichi Banko Yaki and its characteristics.

1)    Please talk about the history of Banko Yaki

“The Yokkaichi Banko Yaki originated in Asahi-cho Obuke 280 years ago in the Edo period through Nunami Ryouzan, who wished his works were perpetuated without modification, put the stamp” Banko Fueki “which means immutable Banko.

The Yokkaichi Banko Yaki came after. Formerly, it was called “Kobanko” (old Banko), that were ceramics with a high level of artistic quality. Later, Mori Yuusetsu created the technique “Kata Banko”, that are shapes assembled as a puzzle, then the clay is fixed and then remove the mold. The Banko Yaki originated through this technique, which later times gave rise to Yokkaichi Banko Yaki.

This technique Kata Banko was industrialized in Yokkaichi, producing thousands of ceramics with the same mold.

Nowadays, we manufacture this “Donabe” (clay pot). We dominate 80% of the clay pots market. And we also have the famous “Kyusu” (teapot), which was established in 1979 as a traditional craft in Japan

This is a brief history about the Banko Yaki. “

2)   About the main features of Banko Yaki

“As previously reported, the claypot is one of the characteristics of Banko Yaki. This pan is large and we call it “Hyaku nin nabe”, since it is possible to prepare food for about 100 people. This clay pot was created in 1959 in the Ceramics Research Institute of Mie Prefecture. We dominate 80% of the clay pots market. The Yokkaichi’s clay pot became known throughout the country, since it is constituted by Petalitos, a type of clay with thermal resistance, even if in contact with fire, this material is unbreakable.

There is also another unique product. The “Shidei kyusu” (purple clay teapot) was also determined as a traditional craft in Japan in 1979. In Tokoname, the clay teapot is red, but ours is purple coloring. In this region, in Suizawa, tea is also produced and, by using this teapot, tea becomes even tastier.

These two products are the ones which lead the main features of this art. “

3)   About the main products of Banko Yaki

“Customers buy much purple tea pot. And, depending on the season, there is a greater demand for products seem quite resistant to high temperatures, such as pots for cooking rice which are being sold at most. And there is a great demand for clay pots. “

And for those who wish to learn the technique of ceramics production in Yokkaichi Banko Yaki, there is a practical training available. There is the only practical training and practical trainings with determined schedules for those who want to learn more about this technique. Ise Katagami is an art that involves cutting the designs made on special paper, forming molds which have been widely used in the Edo era, mainly to dye kimonos. It is a very detailed artistic work that requires precision and skill. Each job is unique and original, resulting in high quality work.

“Initially, Ise Katagami was one of the materials used to dye kimono fabric. Firstly, the outline of the drawing that is in Ise Katagami is cut and then it is used as a template for dyeing. The prints of kimono fabrics were made from Ise Katagami. ”

The origin of Ise Katagami is uncertain. This technique was used in the stamping of kimono fabric, since many centuries ago.

“There are several theories about the history of Ise Katagami, there are theories dated from 1000 years ago, but the closest one is a legend of less than 1000 years. It is an imposing and magnificent beauty construction. It was built with cypress wood from the Owase region and cedar from Kumano region . Around 7,000 cypress trees were used for its exotic structure.  The scent of cypress is striking during the visit.

The Kumano Kodo Center is a cultural institution established by Mie Prefecture and it was built in 2007, in commemoration of the Kumano Kodo record in 2004 as a World Heritage Site. The purpose of the center is to inform visitors about the region and the routes , promote exchanges between residents of the neighborhood and revitalize (rivaralize) this area by conducting various events .

The Kumano Kodo Center is divided into 3 main buildings that offer different activities for visitors.

1 – Exchange area – An area where locals gather nearby and visitors can learn and experience art with cypress and other materials from the region . Several activities open to the public are held.

2 – Display area – in this area visitors will find a permanent exhibition about the history , nature and culture of Kumano Kodo Area . In a planned exhibition hall , exhibitions with various themes are held.

3 – Field studies and collections – it is a special area approved to the important cultural heritage , with study materials related to the Kumano Kodo and Higashi Kishu region.

In display area we found many interesting aspects which are worth to be seen and appreciated . In 2014 we will celebrate 10 years of the Kumano Kodo declaration as a World Heritage. In Kumano Kodo Center visitors will find full information on this route that covers 3 prefectures ( Mie , Nara and Wakayama ) and it is one of the most important sights of Japan.

By replicas, genuine materials and exhibits, visitors can learn about the culture of Kumano Kodo region and are led to a cultural journey from the ancient villages of the Edo period to modern times.

Everyone will be impressed by the beautiful display and will learn much about the culture and traditions of this region.

There are photos on display and real examples of local fauna and flora. Examples of woods and trees , seeds and other curiosities that make this region a very special place. You can even learn about the main seafood and fish that are catched . Owase city is well known by the great amount of yellowtail fishing (buri).

Besides the permanent exhibition on the history and beauty of the four seasons of Kumano Kodo, the display area features other attractions as temporary exhibitions of diverse themes.

Through highway ” Ise Jidousha – dō ” headed to Ise in ” Seiwa Taki JCT ” get in the ” Kise Jidousha – dō ” highway and get off at ” Owase Kita IC ” . Cross route 42 and continue straight ahead on route 778 along the beach front, it takes about 10 minutes to the location .It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes from ” Tsu IC ” exit to Kumano Kodo Center.

Enjoy the beautiful view of the sea and the mountains you will have in the path, it will be a great tour . If you get lost, do not hesitate to ask the locals , they are always solicitous and helpful.

Tado Festival (Kuwana City)
April 4th and 5th

The Tado Festival is held at Tado-Taisha Shrine to perform the most renowned Horseback Climbing Ceremony in order to beseech the gods for a good harvest during the year. Young boys dressed as warriors climb up an extremely steep slope approximately 3 meters high while on horseback.

Inabe Shrine Taisha Festival (Toin Town)
Beginning of April

It is said that this festival was started to raise the morale of young people. Various ceremonies are dedicated to this, including Yabusame (archers clad in the hunting outfit of medieval warriors shoot at three targets as they race by on horseback) and a horseback climbing ceremony.

Sekijuku Summer Festival (Kameyama City)

Since ancient times, abalone continues to be treasured as an offering to the gods. The fish is called “Anori-fugu” because they are mainly caught around Anori fisherman’s wharf.

Akafukumochi has been popular as a specialty of the town surrounding Ise Jingu since the middle of the Edo Era (1707). It is a rice cake, called mochi, covered with plenty of bean jam that is not too sweet and with an elegant flavor.
Ise Udon (Ise City)	Mehari Sushi (Kumano City)
This famous udon dish of Ise includes plump noodles served in a dark broth seasoned with a unique tamari soy sauce and sweet mirin(rice vinegar) and flavored with green onions and red pepper.	Mehari are rice balls wrapped around takana (Japanese pickled vegetables). They are named after the manner you must eat this food. Mehari (wide-eyed) sushi is so big that you have to open your eyes as wide as your month to eat it.
Clams (hamaguri) (Kuwana City)
Kuwana City is famous for Kuwana-no-yaki-hamaguri (grilled clams) since the Edo Era (1603-1867). They are a blessing from the brackish delta where fresh water from the three Kiso rivers and seawater are nicely mixed.

Iga Ueno Castle and Danjiri Kaikan

Iga Ueno Castle

Iga Ueno Castle was first built in 1585 and was rebuilt several times in its long history. The main keep of the current castle was built as part of a reconstruction effort that took place in 1935. A walk around this beautiful castle, also known as the White Phoenix Castle, will make you feel like you’ve been transported back in time.

Iga Ueno Castle is inside Ueno Park, and there are plenty of things to see around the castle. The castle is surrounded by nature and is a great spot for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring. Visitors can also take photos by the Haiseiden, a building dedicated to the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. The castle walls are a marvel in and of themselves, and are some of highest in Japan. It is hard to imagine how the builders of antiquity managed to stack and arrange the stones to such heights.

Iga Ueno Castle

Iga Ueno Castle has three floors, with historical documents on display on each floor. On the first floor, armor and weapons actually used in battle are on display. Visitors can see the intricate details of traditional body armor and battle helmets up close as they walk through the castle. These artifacts were not just tools for self-defense; they were also remarkable pieces of art.

Displays on the second floor feature tools, silverware, furniture and art from the Edo Period (1603-1868). Scenes of Edo Period life flash before visitors’ eyes as they wander around this floor. Amazingly, this keep is constructed entirely of wood.

From the observatory on the third floor, visitors can look upon stunning views of the surrounding area. The mural on the ceiling of the third floor was created by a famous artist in celebration of the castle keep’s reconstruction.

Iga Ueno Castle was designated as a national treasure in 1967, and the castle’s main keep was designated as a cultural property of Iga City in 1985.

The castle is the perfect place for a walk or a day out with the family.

Danjiri Museum

The Danjiri Museum can be found right next to Ueno Park. This museum houses danjiri, the massive floats used during the Ueno Tenjin Festival that takes place between October 23 and October 25 each year. Lifesized figures wearing masks and traditional clothing are used to recreate the “parade of demons,” the procession that occurs during each year’s Ueno Tenjin Festival.

Danjiri Kaikan

The electric atmosphere of the festival is recreated with a video presentation that uses three large video screens.

Visitors can don traditional clothing and take commemorative photos.

Local goods and ninja themed souvenirs are also on sale at the museum!

Entrance fee/Hours of operation

Admission to Iga Ueno Castle is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children.

Admission to the Danjiri Museum is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.

Discounts are available for groups of 30 or more.

Special tickets are available for entry to Iga Ueno Castle, the Danjiri Museum and the Iga Ninja Museum. These special combination tickets are 1450 yen for adults 800 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and 500 yen for children ages 4 to 12.

Those visiting the Danjiri Museum can have their picture taken while wearing a ninja outfit. Pictures are 200 yen each and take about 20 minutes to process. For 1000 yen, visitors can also borrow a ninja outfit for the day and walk around Iga.

Operating hours for Iga Ueno Castle and the Danjiri Museum are 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

Getting to Iga Ueno Castle and the Danjiri Museum

Iga Ueno Castle and the Danjiri Museum are located in the center of Iga City.

Visitors arriving by train should take the Kintetsu Osaka Line to Iga Kanbe Station and transfer to the Iga Railway. Both Iga Ueno Castle and the Danjiri Museum are a 10 minute walk from Uenoshi Station on the Iga Railway.

Visitors arriving by Japan Railways (JR) should transfer to the Iga Railway at Iga Ueno Station or take the bus to Uenoshi Station.

Visitors arriving by car should take the Meihan National Road bound for Osaka. Visitors can either take exit 13 (the Nakase IC) and head west on national road 163, or take exit 15 (the Ueno Higashi IC) and head north. The Iga Ueno Castle and the Danjiri Museum are 5 minutes from both exits.

The ninja are known for their impressive physical prowess and ninjutsu—ninja unique martial arts, knowledge and techniques used for information gathering, etc. To learn more about this fascinating art, head to Iga!

The first stop on a trip to the Iga Ninja Museum is the Ninja House. At first glance,it looks like a normal, traditionally built Japanese house, but hidden in its walls and floors are the secret doors and weapon compartments that the ninjas used.

Kunoichi (female ninja) and ninja guide visitors through the house, explaining the fascinating ways that the ninja defended and hid themselves using the secret mechanisms embedded in the building.

After visiting the Ninja House, visitors move on to the Ninja Experience Hall, where clothing, tools and weapons used by the ninja are on display. The artifacts on display are well preserved, and many have explanations in English, Japanese, Chinese and other languages regarding their purpose.

After leaving the Ninja Experience Hall, visitors enter the Ninja Tradition Hall. This exhibit explains various ninjutsu techniques. Visitors can also view models of secret tunnels that the ninjas dug beneath the villages where they lived. There is also plenty of information about the everyday life and wisdom of the ninja on display.

Ninja goods are also on sale at the museum shop.

Ninja Show

The ninja troupe “Ashura” demonstrates ninjutsu techniques using real ninja tools during this breathtaking show. It takes 5 years of training to be recognized as a part of this group, which performs internationally.

What a spectacular performance! Children in the audience will marvel at the the display of ninja techniques and even adults will be amazed by the performer’s abilities. Take a look at this demonstration using a real sword.

The ninja performers are quick and agile, using real ninja tools to demonstrate battle techniques before your eyes. Each show is about 20 minutes long.

Before leaving the Ninjutsu Demonstration, you can try your hand at throwing shuriken, the well-known star-shaped throwing weapons used by the ninja.

Admission to the Iga Ninja Museum is 700 yen for adults and 400 yen for children. Admission to the Ninjutsu demonstration is separate and costs 300 yen. Shuriken throwing costs 200 yen for 5 throws.

You can also buy a comprehensive ticket that covers admission to the Iga Ninja Museum, Iga Ueno Castle, and the Danjiri Museum for 1450 yen (800 yen for children and 500 yen for infants).

The Iga Ninja Museum is open from 9AM to 5PM each day. Last admission is at 4:30 PM.

Getting to the Iga Ninja Museum

The Iga Ninja Museum is located in the heart of Iga City, in the same area as Iga Ueno Castle.

Those arriving by train should take the Kintetsu Osaka Line to Iga-Kanbe station, transfer to the Iga Railway, and get off at Uenoshi Station. The museum is a 7 minute walk from the station.

Alternatively, visitors using the JR line should get off at Iga Ueno Station and transfer to either the Iga Railway or the bus and ride to Uenoshi Station.

To reach the museum by car, take the Meihan National Highway to the Nakase IC(Exit 13) and exit onto National Road 163 heading west. Or head north after exiting at the Ueno Higashi IC (exit 15). The museum is a 5 minute drive from both of these exits.

In this video, we will tell you a little bit about Toba City’s Mikimoto Pearl Island, a place with a rich history that is certainly worth a visit. Kokichi Mikimoto created the world’s first cultivated pearls on this island in 1893.

A world of wonder is waiting for you on the other side of the “Pearl Bridge,” which connects Mikimoto Pearl Island to the mainland. On the island, you will find spectacular art made of pearls of all shapes and sizes, as well as information on how cultured pearls are made. Educational pamphlets are available in Portuguese, English and other languages.

Visitors can also watch ama—female divers—dive for pearl oysters using the traditional method. Ama wearing traditional white “isogi” diving suits and diving masks hold demonstrations throughout the day.

In the Pearl Museum, you’ll find stunning pieces of art made of pearl and precious stones and metals.

One of the priceless pieces you can view at the museum is the Mikimoto Five-Storied Pagoda, a miniature pagoda made of pearl, precious metals, and precious stones that was modeled after the pagoda at Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture.

Other pieces include the Second Pearl Crown, modeled after the crown worn by byzantine kings and the Dream Hall, a miniature replica of Horyuji Temple’s Yume Dono building.

You can also learn more about Mikimoto’s pearl cultivation technique, which has been carefully preserved by each new generation of Mikimoto pearl makers.

Souvenirs and pearl jewelry can also be purchased on the island. You are sure to be mesmerized by the diverse array of jewelry available, which includes earrings and necklaces.

The admission fee for Mikimoto Pearl Island is 1,500 yen for adults, and 750 yen for children, elementary school students, and junior high school students. Discounts are also available for groups of 20 or more.

Getting to Mikimoto Pearl Island

Mikimoto Pearl Island is located in Toba City on National Rd. 42 by the Toba Aquarium.

Visitors coming from the direction of Tsu should take National Rd. 42 or the Ise Highway.

It is recommended that visitors take the Ise Futami Toba Line, the road that connects Ise and Toba. The end of this road connects to National Rd. 42, and visitors will see Mikimoto Pearl Island on their left.

Visitors arriving by train should take the Kintetsu or JR Line to Toba Station, which is a 5 minute walk from Mikimoto Pearl Island.

Meotoiwa is made up of two rock formations off the coast of Futami that are connected by a shimenawa, a thick rope used in Shinto shrines and rituals.

A torii gate sits atop the larger of the two rock formations, which represents masculinity. The smaller rock formation symbolizes feminity. Together, they represent the bond between husband and wife.

It is truely a sight to behold, and many visitors feel moved as they look upon the Wedded Rocks set against the vast ocean

Visitors can also visit Futami Okitama Shrine, which is located adjacent to The Wedded Rocks.

There is no admission fee to see the Wedded Rocks.

There are also restaurants, local goods shops, shops that sell local seafood and snacks, as well as an aquarium nearby.

Getting to the Wedded Rocks

The Wedded Rocks are located in Futami, which is a town in Ise City.

Visitors arriving by car should take the Ise IC Highway to the Ise Futami Toba Line and exit at Futami Junction towards Futami. Those that want to avoid highways should take National Rt. 23 and take a left onto National Rd. 42 towards Futami after passing the on ramp for the Toricho IC. Visitors should see the entrance to the Wedded Rocks on their left after then turning left at the intersection labeled “chaya” (茶屋) and driving a short distance.

Those visiting by Kintetsu Railway should get off at Ujiyamada Station and ride a bus bound for Toba to the “Meotoiwa Higashi Guchi” （夫婦岩東口）bus stop. Alternatively, visitors can also ride JR to Futamiura Station, which is 15 mins walking distance from the Wedded Rocks.

Amaterasu Omikami is the ancestral shrine of the Japanese imperial family, and is considered to be the patron deity of Japan and the Japanese people.

The surface area of Ise Jingu’s grounds are approximately 5,000 hectares. More than 1500 ceremonies are performed on the shrine complex’s grounds each year to pray for the well being of the imperial family and the nation.

Uji Bridge, the bridge that straddles the Isuzu River on the route to Naiku, is seen as a bridge between the mundane world and holy ground. Upon entering this sacred space, visitors rinse their hands and mouths to purify body and soul. Some people also use water from the Isuzu River to perform this purification ritual.

The approach to Naiku is flanked by beautiful forests and buildings, providing visitors with a soothing atmosphere that calms the soul.

At the end of the path are the stone steps that lead to the central shrine. This area is considered one of the most sacred places in the entire shrine complex, and the foot of the steps is the last place that visitors are allowed to take photographs. After ascending the steps, visitors stand with their hands clasped in prayer and a wish in their heart.

When praying at Ise Jingu, it is customary to bow twice, clap twice, and then bow one more time.

Ise Jingu is ceremonially rebuilt every 20 years, a tradition known as Shikinen Sengu. This tradition has continued for 1300 years, and serves to perpetuate traditional religion, construction techniques, and culture.

There are plenty of things to do around Ise Jingu, as well. It is an ideal place to experience nature with friends and family.

There is a district near Ise Jingu that features traditional architecture. Its streets are lined with stores that sell handmade crafts and local goods, as well as restaurants that serve local cuisine.

Getting to Ise Jingu’s Naiku

Those traveling by car on the Ise IC Highway should exit onto National Rt 23. and follow National Rt. 23 to Naiku.

Those who do not wish to use highways should take National Rt. 23 south past Matsusaka, and then follow National Rd. 23 in the direction of Ise. National Rt. 23 terminates near Naiku.

Naiku is a short bus ride away from Kintetsu Railway’s Ujiyamada Station and Iseshi Station, which is serviced by both Kintetsu and JR. Visitors should get off at the “Naiku” bus stop.

Climate of Mie:

Mie is on Japan’s Pacific coast and enjoys four distinct seasons. Beaches are popular during the summer days. The rainy season lasts through June and early July. In winter, snow sometimes falls in low-lying areas. Spring and autumn are the best times of the year for travel and tend to be the busiest times for sightseeing.

Birthplace of the Ninja

Surrounded by mountains, Iga formerly prospered as a castle town and is famous as the home of ninja spies. It is also the birthplace of the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. There are several historical places and vestiges of the past around the area, some of which still have the mystery and grandeur of bygone days. The mountainous areas in the southern and eastern parts of Iga are set aside as national parks and offer several opportunties to enjoy nature during all four seasons.

Stations Along the Historic Tokaido Road

The Northern Area is bounded by the Yoro Mountains to the north and the towering Suzuka Range to the west. During the Edo Period this area was the location of part of the Tokaido Road, the most important trade route from eastern to western Japan, and was crowded with travelers.
This is a place where history abounds, the landscape changes from season to season, and you can follow in the footsteps of travelers of long ago.

A Landscape Blessed by the Sea

After a brief trip upstream along the sparkling waters of the Isuzu River, you can see the Ise Jingu standing solemnily in the middle of a grove of cedars. The sacred site of Ise has been a destination for travelers since ancient times. Ise is the “starting point for all journeys in Japan,” and  is regarded as the cradle of Japanese culture. Surrounding Ise the beautiful costal landscapes of Ise-Shima National Park stretch as far as the eye can see. A growing number of seaside resorts offer wonderful opportunities to enjoy this marine playground. Ise-Shima ranks as one of Japan’s best tourist resort areas, a place where history and natural beauty meet.

A Door to the Past

In the Edo Period Matsusaka prospered both as a castle town and as a major trading center, due to the many merchants and Ise-bound pilgrims who made their way through this town. Even today, many historical points of interest scattered through the area attest to the past prosperity of the district. Nearby Osugi Valley and Okukahada Gorge offer beautiful scenery.
