Various helplines have also been established to help families that are having trouble paying for their children’s’ education expenses. Families in need should take advantage of these services to ensure that their children can receive an education. Student Loans Student loans for senior high school students The “Mie Prefecture Scholarship for Senior High School and Technical School Students” is a system that provides loans for students who demonstrate high academic motivation and financial need. For more information on eligibility requirements, loan amounts and other details, speak to a representative from your child’s school or contact the Mie Prefectural Board of Education. Loan amounts and when loans are paid to applicants differs by student. There are also two types of loans: those that require applicants to pay interest, and those that are interest free. The loans are awarded to exceptional non-Japanese students with plans to remain in Mie and contribute to the internationalization of the prefecture. TEL:059-223-5006 School loans for Students studying abroad The Mie Prefecture Scholarship for Self-Supporting International Students provides loans for students studying abroad who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and character. The goal of this scholarship fund is to encourage students to adopt a global perspective and to develop human resources for the 21st century. There are many other scholarship funds run by the prefecture, municipalities in Mie, and organizations that we have not mentioned here. Those interested in applying should contact the financial aid office at the school they currently attend. Please note that the majority of financial aid for students in Japan comes in the form of loans that must be repaid after a fixed period of time.
